TCM Book Review #10: Lead for God’s Sake! by Todd Gongwer
Lead . . . for God's Sake!
We completed our TCM best top ten books right where we began, talking about Purpose! We began with Simon Sinek, who said we must first start with 'Why,' and we concluded with Todd Gongwer inviting us into a story that is all about purpose and faith. Gongwer talks about being in relationship with God and with others, the first two commandments in the bible.
In Lead for God’s Sake, the author puts the reader into a story about a high school basketball coach trying to motivate his team to win. The coach is so focused on wins and losses, “his treasure,” that he loses sight of what is most important in motivating and leading both us and others, the heart. The message is deeply personal and very inspiring. We learn that it is ultimately the heart that brings real life to a person, and our Will, Love, and Passion overcome any other measures (or treasures) such as wins and losses.
Intrinsic motivators outweigh extrinsic ones, says Gongwer, much like Daniel Pink in his top ten TCM book Drive. The Heart is the most powerful influencer in life, especially when combined with our hands and feet through our actions and deeds.
Much like our previous books, the notion of giving up more of ourselves for the greater good of the team resonates in this story. Ultimately, the coach and his team find their way to understand critical lifelong principles of servant leadership and selfless teamwork.
Leadership is one part influence and two parts responsibility: As people of influence, we must always take responsibility for our contribution to problems that arise around us.
Are you a leader?
Who is following you and why?
Are you leading for your own sake or the sake of others?
Our TCM Top Ten has been an educational and inspiring journey into life, leadership and the pursuit of joy and fulfillment in life and work. We hope you have enjoyed these books and look forward to sharing many more in the future.
